Monthly Morsel Question: What is your favorite afternoon snack?

Posted by Nina on April 30th, 2010 at 08:06am

For the April Monthly Morsel question, we asked you “What is your favorite afternoon snack?”  There is a wide range of different things people like…see what our blogger friends had to say:

From Bethany Morford, This, That, and T’other

My favorite snack for anytime of the day, morning, noon, afternoon, or midnight, is a bowl of dry cereal with milk. When I was growing up as a missionary child in Ukraine, cold cereal was unavailable, so for breakfast, we had oatmeal, cream of wheat, pancakes, or french toast. On the rare occasions that we did have cereal, we were limited to one small bowl. (Of course in a family with six children, that pretty much finished the box!) So, now it is wonderful to be able to have this special treat anytime!

Ah, my fave afternoon snack? Well, I often swim around 1 p.m. So when I get home I’m famished. I love to turn to dark chocolate in a variety of forms, including a homemade chocolate muffin, scone, hot chocolate or simply a truffle (or two). Quality dark chocolate (at least 60% cocoa content) is fab! Not only does it have nutrients and antioxidants, but it helps cut cravings for unhealthy snack food. Gee, it’s 1:30–time for a chocolatey snack to take me to Chocolate Heaven.

From Calista White, Each Day is a Gift

My favorite afternoon snack is nachos. I make them in my toaster oven. Here’s what you need:

Tortilla chips
Shredded Colby Jack cheese
Your favorite salsa

Put a layer of chips on a cookie sheet and sprinkle a good handful of cheese over the top. Toast it in the oven until the cheese gets good and melted. For my toaster oven, I just use the “toast” setting and put it in there for about five minutes. Remove and let cool slightly before dipping in the salsa and eating.

Yum!

My FAVORITE snack is to pop some 94% Fat Free Butter Flavored …then, drizzle it with a little agave nectar and stir.  You can also use air popped popcorn, just be sure to sprinkle a little sea salt on AFTER the agave nectar.

Tadah!!! Instant Healthy Kettle Korn ~ It’s salty, sweet and snack-a-licious!

My life is over-scheduled, I live close to the Mexican border, and I look forward to my next meal before I have finished with my current repast. What this means is – I have a protein-filled quesadilla at 3:00 p.m. daily.

From Sabrina Persico, Sabby in Suburbia

Afternoons can be a little hectic here. My oldest gets home from school and my 3 year old wakes up from nap, all in one big collision. I try to make things simple, healthy and not too filling so that they’ll still want dinner at 5pm. Yes, we eat dinner at 5pm…call me crazy, but mama is a hungry hungry hippo by that time too. Normal afternoon snacks consist of apple slices, almonds (or other nuts), bananas, dried fruit (Craisins) or carrots. Sometimes, I give them a slice of toast with peanut butter or a small bowl of cheese crackers. This usually seems to please the little monkeys until dinner is served.

It’s fun to see everyone’s different choices for afternoon snacks. People can get quite passionate when you ask them to start describing their favorite snack.
My favorite afternoon snack is either swiss cheese slices with dijon mustard, or whole grain chocolate chip cookies dipped in milk. I can definitely feel a nice difference in the rest of my day when I make a healthful snack choice. The snacks are good ways to regroup myself and my tastes, and help me continue conquering the day while also staying true to myself.
