Jan Leasure Guest Post: America’s Love Affair With Cheese Ten Ways to Save!Although cheese doesn’t love all of us, most of us do love cheese.  Sliced, diced, melted, as an appetizer, main dish and even as a dessert, cheese is actually a favorite around the globe.  With over 2,000 identifiable varieties of cheese, this nutritious and delicious food is an item that can keep us fed and is available at a discount if you know where to look. In America alone we purchased more than $40 billion dollars worth of cheese.  Imagine what they spend in Italy?  As money in our economy becomes more scarce and cheese is showing up in more of your recipes, make sure you are a frugal shopper.

.)  Watch your weekly supermarket flyers for sales on cheese. Buy on sale.

.)  Use coupon discounts.  Don’t forget that you can combine an in-store coupon with a manufacturer’s coupon for a double savings.

.)  Bricks of cheese are usually significantly cheaper than pre-shredded.

.)  If bricks of cheese are “two-for-one” remember you can use a coupon on the purchased brick, not the free brick.

.)  Shred your brick cheese yourself as you need it.  It will be cheaper as well as half the cost of the more convenient pre-shredded variety.

.)  Contrary to popular belief, cheese can be frozen.  I have frozen large blocks of Parmesan, mozzarella and Swiss with no negative effects.

.)  Check out your local warehouse stores; Sam’s Club and Costco often have cheese specials that provide deeper discounts than local grocers (but they don’t take coupons so comparison shop first).

.)  As we get into summer don’t forget your local farmer’s market as a cheese outlet. There is no substitute for fresh and CHEAP!

.)  Be “variety flexible” if you like to cook with cheese or serve as an appetizer or dessert, buy what’s on sale and experiment.  You might find something you really love for a fraction of the regular price.

.)  Using cheese in a recipe? You might be able to use a stronger version of the ingredient, same flavor and result, but use 1/3rd as much.
