Cooking with Julia Child

With the release of the new movie “Julie and Julia,” Julia Child’s 1961 cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking has once again climbed the best seller list and has American home cooks rushing around their kitchens trying to recreate traditional French dishes like Julie Powell did in the movie. For those who aren’t familiar, the movie is based on a book by Julie Powell (that originated from a blog) in which she attempts to cook her way through Julia Child’s 524 recipes in 365 days. The movie is interspersed with scenes from Julia Child’s life in France and how she came to be, well, Julia Child.

One of Child’s most famous recipes is her Boeuf Bourguignon, a French beef stew in red wine with bacon, mushrooms and onions. Child’s editor went home and tried this recipe when she read the original manuscript of Mastering the Art and fell in love with it. As Child puts it in the cookbook, “Carefully done, and perfectly flavored, it is certainly one of the most delicious beef dishes concocted by man…” To get the original recipe, you will have to buy the cookbook, but RecipeLion has an adapted version of beouf bourguignon that is a delicious, simplified version of Child’s mainstay. Try this dish for your family or a loved one this weekend, and as Child would say, Bon Appetit!
